Backyard Ultra Rules

The event follows a Backyard Ultra format.


Participants must complete a 6.7km loop every hour, starting on the hour.


Each loop must be completed within the hour.


All runners must be present at the start line when the next hour begins to continue.


Failure to start a new loop on time results in elimination.


The event continues until only one runner completes a full loop within the allotted hour.


There is no set finish time or distance.

Participant Responsibilities

Participants are responsible for their own pacing, nutrition, hydration, and recovery.
Any form of outside assistance during a loop is not allowed.
Participants must follow all instructions given by event staff and volunteers at all times.

Please bring:

  • Your own nutrition
  • Warm layers for the evening
  • Headlamp and reflective gear for night running
  • A chair or basecamp setup

Come prepared to be out there for longer than you think.

How far do I need to run?

That’s up to you. Some people stop after one loop. Others go much longer. You decide when you’re done.

Safety & Medical
  • Participants take part at their own risk.
  • You confirm that you are physically fit and medically cleared to participate in an endurance running event.
  • Event staff may remove a participant from the event if they believe it is unsafe for them to continue.
  • Medical support will be available on site, but this does not replace personal responsibility.
Can friends or supporters/crew come?

Yes. Supporters are welcome but should be respectful of public spaces and other promenade users.

What happens if I miss a start time?

If you’re not at the start line when the hour begins, your event is over.

Public Space Use
  • The event takes place in a public area.
  • Participants must be respectful of other promenade users, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Any disruptive, unsafe or disrespectful behaviour may result in removal from the event.

This isn’t about how far you run.

It’s about how many times you’re willing to start again.
